Honors in History of Art, Design, and Visual Culture


General Information


Students planning to apply for admission to the Honors program should consult BA Honors  for admission requirements.

Program Requirements


Honors in the History of Art, Design, and Visual Culture requires a minimum of ★54, a maximum of ★60 at the junior and senior levels in HADVC courses including: at least ★12 taken in seminars at the 400- or 500-levels and HADVC 418  (Honors essay) for which preparation will commence in the third year in consultation with the Departmental Advisor. For the Honors program, CLASS 254  and CLASS 255  may be used toward the senior level requirements.

The Honors program in the History of Art, Design, and Visual Culture does not have a minor requirement; however, ★6 at the senior level in a Language other than English (normally French, German, Italian, Spanish, Chinese or Japanese) is required. Consent of Departmental Advisor is required in choice of Language other than English.

Promotion Requirements


Promotion from year to year requires an overall GPA of at least 3.0 with a GPA of at least 3.3 in all HADVC courses in the Fall/Winter.

Graduation Requirements


Graduation with Honors in History of Art, Design, and Visual Culture requires an overall GPA of at least 3.0 with a GPA of at least 3.3 in all HADVC courses. Graduation with First Class Honors requires a GPA of at least 3.7 on all senior-level HADVC courses and an overall GPA of at least 3.5 on the last ★30 completed.

Combined Honors in History of Art, Design, and Visual Culture


General Information


Students may pursue a combined Honors program in History of Art, Design, and Visual Culture, and another discipline.

Program Requirements


The common requirements in a combined Honors program are the same as for other Honors programs (refer to Bachelor of Arts (Honors) ).

A Combined Honors degree in History of Art, Design, and Visual Culture and another discipline requires a minimum of ★36 at the junior and senior levels in History of Art, Design, and Visual Culture and a minimum of ★36 in the other discipline.

Course Requirements


  • ★15 at the 200-level and ★3 at the 300-level in HADVC, including at least ★3 in an area outside the student’s area of specialization. For the Combined Honors program, CLASS 254  and CLASS 255  may be used toward the senior level requirements.
  • HADVC 418  (★6) Honors Essay is normally required. However, with the Advisor’s approval, this may be replaced with ★6 at the 400- or 500-level in HADVC if the student will be completing an Honors Essay in the other discipline. With special permission, a Combined Honors Essay may also be allowed in lieu of HADVC 418  [see Bachelor of Arts (Honors) ]. Consult the Honors Advisor for further information.
  • ★3 at the 400- or 500-level in HADVC.
  • A further ★9 in HADVC, including a maximum of ★6 at the junior level.

Promotion and Graduation Requirements


In a combined Honors program, students must meet the promotion and graduation standards of each discipline. The requirements in History of Art, Design, and Visual Culture are outlined above.
