INT D 361 - Fundamentals of Energy, Environment and Sustainability ★ 3 (fi 6) (either term, 3-1s-0) Provides an overview of the following topics: fundamentals of conventional (e.g. coal/oil), nonconventional (e.g. oil sands/shale gas), and renewable energy (e.g. wind, solar, hydro, nuclear) sources; definitions, occurrences, amounts exploited and exploitable, as well as environmental impacts on a basic level; regulatory responses and responsibilities, ownership of resources, role of different levels of governments, as well as international obligations, environmental regulations and treaties; elementary economics related to the consumption patterns, prices, production costs, externalities, and relationship to carbon costs and intensities; special attention is paid to technologies involved in a broad sense; cultural and social drivers in each case when appropriate are discussed; concepts of sustainability for energy systems.
