The Degree of PhD with Specialization in Biopreservation (Laboratory Medicine and Pathology) [Graduate]


Program Requirements


Students entering the program after a BSc degree are required to complete a minimum of ★12 in graded coursework and a thesis.

Students entering the program after an MSc degree are required to complete a minimum of ★6 in graded coursework and a thesis.

Required Coursework


  • LABMP 530  – this course is normally taken in the first year
  • LABMP 510  
  • If required, two ★3 graded graduate-level courses in Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (LABMP) or approved courses in other departments
  • It is recommended that all students also complete LABMP 511  
  • Course requirements are approved by the Supervisor and Supervisory Committee based on the background of the student and the area of research specialization.
  • Additional coursework may be required

Thesis


  • Registration in 900-level THES

Seminar Requirement


Students must attend specified seminars and make one or more presentations as specified by the Department.

PhD Proposal


Students must submit a PhD Proposal package following the completion of the majority of their coursework and within the first 2 years of the program. See PhD Proposal on the Department website for details.

Candidacy Exam


Students must complete their candidacy examination within 6 months of their PhD Proposals being approved by the LMP Graduate Studies Committee.

Ethics Requirement


Thesis-based students in the Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology fulfill the FGSR Academic Integrity and Ethics Training Requirement  through LABMP 530 and by completing the Ethics and Scientific Integrity (ESI) Day offered by the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry

Professional Development Requirement


Students in the Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology must satisfy the FGSR Professional Development Requirement .

Length of Program


For the PhD, the minimum program length is three years. A realistic program length is 5 years.

The maximum time to complete the PhD program as set by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research is six years.
