The Degree of MSc (Chemistry) [Graduate]


Program Requirements


Students are required to complete a minimum of ★9 in coursework and a thesis.

Coursework


  • A minimum of three ★3 graduate-level courses, to be approved by the Graduate Advisory Committee and/or the supervisory committee.
  • CHEM 502 - Departmental Research Seminar  
    • All MSc students are required to register in CHEM 502 in the fall and winter terms for the first two years of their program. Students must attend a minimum number of 502 seminars and submit evaluations of these, to receive credit for the course.

Thesis


  • Registration in 900-level THES.

Supervisory Committee Meeting


Master’s students are required to schedule and attend a meeting with their Supervisory Committee after the first year in the program in order to review progress of the research and present a clear timeline for completion of the program.

Ethics Requirement


The Chemistry Graduate Curriculum Committee recommends the following courses be taken to satisfy the ethics requirement

  • Plagiarism Seminar
  • Code of Student Behaviour Seminar
  • GET (Graduate Ethics Training) online course

Academic Standing Requirement


Students must obtain a cumulative GPA of 2.7 or greater in their first and subsequent years in order to remain in the graduate program.

Residence Requirement


The minimum period of residence is two four-month terms of full-time attendance at the University of Alberta.

Length of Program


The time required to complete the MSc degree will vary according to the previous training of the candidate and the nature of the research project; however a minimum of two years is normally required.

The maximum time to complete the thesis-based MSc program as set by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research is four years.
