AUENG 270 - America, Exceptionalism and Empire

★ 3 (fi 6) (either term, 3-0-0) Representative works of American literature from discovery and the Puritan migration in the 16th and 17th centuries through the American Civil War (1861- 1865). The course focuses on texts and contexts that explain Canada’s nearest neighbour, with a particular focus on how theocratic beginnings gave way to a democratic republic, and how laissez faire became the capitalist enterprise we know today. Slavery and racism, American exceptionalism and westward expansion are key topics. Prerequisites: AUENG 102. Note: Not to be taken by students with credit in AUENG 370 (2021).
