Bachelor of Arts (Native Studies) / Bachelor of Education in Elementary Education Combined Degrees Program [Native Studies]

General Information


The Bachelor of Arts (Native Studies) / Bachelor of Education in Elementary Education Combined Degrees Program consists of 150 units overall. The first three years (90 units) are taken in the Faculty of Native Studies and the last two years (60 units) are taken in the Faculty of Education. In this combined degree in Elementary Education, students select one of the following minors: Native Education, Cree Language or Social Studies. See Note 8 for course requirements.

The sequencing of courses taken in the program does not allow for much flexibility throughout the five years; therefore, students should plan their programs carefully. Students are advised to follow the prescribed order as closely as possible.

Program Requirements


Year 1 (30 units) Taken in the Faculty of Native Studies


Year 2 (30 units) Taken in the Faculty of Native Studies


Year 3 (30 units) Taken in the Faculty of Native Studies


Year 4 and 5 (60 units) Taken in the Faculty of Education


Students should refer to their individual Program Sheet for proper course sequencing.

Notes


  1. EDEL 305  and EDEL 316  must be taken in Year 4 as pre/co-requisites to EDFX 325 .
  2. The Introductory Professional Term is normally offered in Year 4 Winter Term only and consists of EDFX 325 , 6 units EDEL courses, and EDPY 303 .
  3. The Advanced Professional Term is normally offered in Year 5 Fall Term only and consists of EDFX 425 , 3 units EDEL, and EDPY 301 .
  4. Not all courses are offered each term or in a 13-week or condensed format.
  5. Students should be aware of course prerequisites and refer to their individual program sheets for the proper sequencing of courses.
  6. Program advice should be obtained from both Education and Native Studies.

Native Education (18 units)


Cree Language (18 units)


Students with Cree as a minor must complete NS 152 , NS 252 , and NS 352  before Year 4.

Social Studies (18 units)


  • 12 units chosen, in three distinct subject areas, from Anthropology, Archaeology (Department of Classics), Human Geography, Economics, History, Law, Philosophy, Political Science, Religion, Sociology.
  • 3 units chosen in Canadian History chosen from NS or HIST.

Academic Standing and Promotion


  1. To be eligible to continue in the program, students are required to have a grade point average of at least 2.0. The grade point average will be calculated on all courses completed in the program.
  2. A student who has been assigned a grade of “W” or “NC” in a Field Experience course is entitled to a second registration in this course. See also Reregistration in Courses . Notwithstanding Reregistration in Courses , if a student receives a “W” or “NC” in the second attempt of a Field Experience course, the student will be required to withdraw from the Combined Degrees program.

Graduation Requirements


Graduation requirements include an overall grade point average of 2.0 on all courses completed in the 150-unit program, and a GPA of 2.1 on all courses completed in the Native Studies major. 100-level courses: For the purpose of the combined degrees program normally no more than 60 units at the 100-level may be taken for degree credit. To qualify for the Bachelor of Native Studies and the Bachelor of Education degrees, students must successfully complete relevant program requirements, have met the promotion, graduation, final year, and residence requirements, and have received the recommendation of the Faculty of Native Studies Council and the Faculty of Education.

Degrees with Distinction shall be awarded to students who achieve a graduation grade point average of 3.5 or higher on the last 90 units taken at the University of Alberta. In cases where a student has taken courses at another institution as part of these 90 units, the Degree with Distinction will be awarded at the discretion of the Faculty. Student Advising: Students will be jointly advised regarding program and course requirements by designated advisors in both the Faculty of Native Studies and the Faculty of Education.
