Master of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering)


Program Requirements


Students are required to complete a minimum of 27.0 units in coursework including a 3-unit capstone project.

Coursework


  • Eight 3-unit graduate-level courses which must be approved by the Graduate Coordinator
    • five must be in the candidate’s major field (i.e., MEC E courses)
    • A maximum of three courses in any combination of MEC E 500- and MEC E 700-level courses can be credited towards the minimum course requirements
    • No reading courses can be credited towards the minimum course requirements.
  • Additional coursework may be required.

Capstone Project


  • MEC E 910  (3 units) – Directed Research Project. Students are responsible for securing a capstone supervisor and should do so based on common research interests. Students are encouraged to enroll in MEC E 910 only in the academic term in which they plan to formally submit their capstone project.

Ethics Requirement


Engineering students must complete GPS ethics requirements based on their programs.

Professional Development Requirement


Engineering students must complete GPS’s professional development requirement.

Academic Standing Requirement


Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 throughout the course of the program.

Failure to maintain the required cumulative GPA will normally result in a recommendation by the Graduate Coordinator to GPS that the student be placed on academic probation and/or be required to withdraw.

Residence Requirement


There is no residence requirement for the degree of MEng in Mechanical Engineering.

Length of Program


Normally, it takes 18 to 24 months to complete the MEng degree.

The maximum time to complete the course-based MEng program as set by the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies is six years.
