Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Canadian Studies (Faculté Saint-Jean)

This interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary program features studies on Canada and the world in a plurilingual context, including Canadian and international Francophonies. It is based on a transversal and transcultural approach.

Program orientations include the following areas:

Bilingualism, multilingualism and linguistic rights
Economy, sustainable development, and social justice
Literature, cultures, and media
Societies, communities, and health

Entrance Requirements

Faculté Saint-Jean’s minimum admission requirements are an undergraduate degree with an admission GPA of at least 3.0 on the 4-point scale from the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification and standing from a recognized institution. The admission GPA will be calculated on the last 60 units of graded coursework completed, or on the equivalent of the last two years of full-time graded coursework.

Applicants must have at least 30 units of 200-level courses or higher, or the equivalent, in Canadian Studies or courses related to Canadian Studies (courses recognized by the academic institution of the student).

Applicants must have adequate French language proficiency, as demonstrated by:

Completion of a degree or its university-level equivalent from an institution recognized by the University of Alberta, and where the language of instruction is French. Proof that instruction for the degree was in French is required,
OR
a satisfactory score on an approved French proficiency test (the list of language proficiency tests approved by the Faculté Saint-Jean is available at the Faculté Saint-Jean Graduate Studies Office)

Applicants are also required to submit the following:

Letter of intent indicating the orientation and research area
One sample of written work (between 5 and 15 pages)
Two letters of reference sent directly to the Faculté Saint-Jean

Note all documentation must be submitted in French.

Program Requirements

The MA in Interdisciplinary Canadian Studies is a thesis-based program.

Students are required to complete a minimum of 18 units in coursework and a thesis

Required courses (6 units)

Elective Courses (12 units)

At least four 3-unit courses to be selected in consultation with the supervisor and graduate program administration at Faculté Saint-Jean.

Thesis

Registration in 900-level THES. Students are required to successfully defend a thesis.

Ethics and Professional Development Requirements

Students are required to meet the GPS Ethics and Academic Citizenship Requirement and the GPS Professional Development Requirement .

Length of Program

In order to obtain an MA degree, full-time students are expected to complete the program within two years.

The maximum time to complete the thesis-based MA program as set by the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies is four years.
