Doctor of Philosophy with specialization in Medical Physics (Oncology)

Admission to the PhD is dependent on the recommendation of the Graduate Coordinating Committee.

Program Requirements


Students are required to complete a minimum of 3 or 6 units in coursework beyond the MSc requirements , and a thesis; please see Coursework for specific requirements for each field of specialization.

NOTE: Those in Magnetic Resonance Physics must take the following course, in addition to the one above:

Thesis


  • Registration in 900-level THES. The student’s research is presented in the form of a thesis which must be defended before a final examining committee.

PhD Proposal


Students must write a PhD proposal in the form of a research grant proposal that is approved by the supervisory committee usually within 12 -30 months of the start of the graduate program. The PhD proposal must be approved before initiating the candidacy exam process.

Candidacy Exam


Medical Physics PhD students must pass an oral candidacy examination consisting of a defence of the research proposal including general medical physics. Students must successfully pass one of the Advanced Specialization Courses before proceeding to the candidacy exam.

Ethics Requirement


Students must meet the FGSR Ethics and Academic Citizenship Training Requirement  through the completion of INT D 710  (for both master’s and doctoral students) and INT D 720  (for doctoral students) by the end of the first term of registration in their degree program.

Residence Requirement


The minimum period of residence is two academic years of full-time attendance at the University of Alberta.

Length of Program


The maximum time to complete the PhD program as set by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research is six years.
