Bachelor of Arts in Recreation, Sport, and Tourism


The Bachelor of Arts in Recreation, Sport and Tourism (BARST) degree based on a foundation of knowledge in the liberal arts, humanities, and social sciences, encompasses leisure, recreation, sport, tourism, parks and natural areas, the arts, culture, heritage, and multicultural and Indigenous communities. Graduates of the BARST degree contribute meaningfully in these contexts, by designing and delivering programs, coordinating events, managing facilities, leading staff and volunteers, and/or working with policy in local, municipal, provincial, and national non-governmental agencies or non-profit organizations, government agencies, and professional sport organizations.

General BARST Program Structure


Students in the BARST Degree take a program of 120 units, consisting of:

  1. Degree Core:
    A group of required courses in Kinesiology, Sport, and/or Recreation totalling 60 units.
  2. Liberal Arts Foundation:
    A group of required out of Faculty courses totalling 18 units that consist of:
  • 3 units in 100-level ENGL OR 3 units in WRS
  • 15 units of Liberal Arts Options
  1. Indigenous Content Requirement: 3 units in NS 201  
  2. In Field Learning Experience: One 6 unit course that requires students to learn in a workplace or research context relevant to their subject of study.
  3. Senior KRLS or RLS Course Offerings: A group of courses totalling 9 units. Must be 300-level or higher. 3-4 courses will be offered within this category each year.  Note: These courses must be different from courses listed in the core of the degree program.
  4. Open Options:
    A group of courses totalling 24 units.
    Note: A minimum of 12 units must be at the 200-level or higher.

Course Sequence for BARST program


Students are advised to follow the prescribed order as closely as possible.

Year 4 (30 units)


  • 6 units in Senior KRLS/RLS Course Offerings
  • 12 units in Open Options

Note


KRLS 493  restricted to students who have completed a minimum of 45 units toward the BARST degree program.

Suspended Minors


Effective July 2026, there will be no further admission to the following minors within the Bachelor of Arts in Recreation, Sport, and Tourism program. Students who entered these prior to July 2026 must complete all program requirements by April 30, 2031. The last degree with these specific minors will be granted at Spring Convocation 2031. Continuing students must refer to the Calendar under which they were admitted for program, promotion and graduation requirements.
