Master of Science (Renewable Resources)


Program Requirements


Students are required to complete a minimum of 8 units in coursework and a thesis.

Coursework


  • A minimum of 6 units of courses at the 500- or 600- level, including at least 3 units in research methods, statistics, and/or experimental design.
  • Additional courses may be required at the discretion of the student’s supervisor, based on the student’s previous training and the anticipated needs in the student’s area of specialization.

Thesis


  • Registration in 900-level THES. Students must prepare an acceptable thesis presenting results of research conducted. Candidates will be examined orally on their thesis results by committees formed according to Supervision and Examinations of this Calendar.

Professional Development and Ethics Requirement


Students are required to fulfill the GPS Professional Development Requirement  and the GPS Ethics and Academic Citizenship Requirement .

The courses REN R 602  and REN R 603  may be used to fulfill part of the GPS Professional Development Requirement. REN R 602  is recommended for students pursuing a professional career in forestry, conservation and environmental management, whereas REN R 603  is recommended for those considering a research career.

Residence Requirement


The minimum period of residence is two, four-month terms of full-time attendance at the University of Alberta.

Length of Program


Normally, at least two academic years of research are required to complete the MSc.

The maximum time to complete the thesis-based MSc program as set by the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies is four years.
