Honors in Mathematics [Arts]

General Information
Students planning to apply for admission to the Honors program should consult BA Honors for admission requirements. See Bachelor of Arts Honors for Faculty regulations concerning the Honors program. The BA Honors in Mathematics is a flexible program. Students can design the degree for a general liberal education or for a specific career. The Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences also offers various BSc programs with Honors in Mathematics (see BSc Subject Areas ). Program Requirements
Honors in Mathematics requires a minimum of 51 and a maximum of 57 units as follows. Notes
- With consent of the Department, students may substitute MATH 100 , MATH 134 , MATH 144 , or MATH 154 for MATH 117 ; MATH 101 , MATH 136 , MATH 146 , or MATH 156 for MATH 118 ; MATH 102 or MATH 125 for MATH 127 ; MATH 225 for MATH 227 . Students replacing MATH 117 with an alternate calculus course will need to take MATH 216 , while those replacing MATH 227 with MATH 225 will need to take MATH 226 .
- Several of the required courses, including MATH 411 , MATH 412 , MATH 447 , MATH 448 , may only be offered in alternate years.
- With consent of the Department, students may substitute MATH 201 for MATH 336 . In such cases, an additional 3 units of MATH or MA PH at the 300-level or higher is required for the degree.
Promotion Requirements
Promotion from year to year requires an overall GPA of at least 3.0 with a GPA of at least 3.3 in all MATH courses in the Fall/Winter. Graduation Requirements
Graduation with Honors in Mathematics requires a graduation average of at least 3.0 with an average of at least 3.3 in all MATH courses. Graduation with First Class Honors requires an average of at least 3.7 on all MATH courses taken in the last two years and an average of at least 3.5 or better on all courses in the two final years (last 60 units). |
