Doctor of Philosophy (Laboratory Medicine and Pathology)


Program Core Competencies


The following are the program-specific requirements to satisfy the FoMD’s Program Core Competencies (See Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry Program Core Competencies ).

Students may be required to take further courses to enhance their critical thinking/reading and background knowledge for success in their program.

Specific courses required for the MSc or PhD degree that have been taken to satisfy the requirements of a previous degree can be substituted with another course at the same level, subject to recommendation by the supervisor (in consultation with the supervisory committee where appropriate), and Departmental approval.

1. Professional Development and Ethics


See GPS Ethics and Academic Citizenship Requirement  and Professional Development Requirement .

2. Communication


Students must attend seminars as specified by the department. Students must make one or more oral presentations as specified by the department.

3. Critical Reading/Thinking


Students are required to take ONE 3 unit course such as the following to satisfy this core competency. The course is chosen in consultation with the student’s Supervisor and Supervisory Committee based on the background of the student and the are of research specialization.

4. Background Knowledge


One 3-unit graduate-level graded course in Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (LABMP) or from the approved courses in other departments. Course requirements are approved by the Supervisor and Supervisory Committee based on the background of the student and the area of research specialization.

Thesis


Registration in 900-level THES. Students are required to prepare and defend a thesis on a topic approved by their supervisor and supervisory committee.
