General Information

The subject area requirements listed on this page are part of the Bachelor of Science offered by the Faculty of Science. Students must ensure they are familiar with and follow all University Regulations and Faculty of Science Regulations in addition to the program requirements outlined below.

Subject Area Courses

Geophysics subject area courses include all courses at the 200-level or higher that satisfy specific requirements or options in the respective Honors or Major requirements, as listed below, and all courses at the 200-level or above with course designators EAS, GEOPH, MA PH, and PHYS.

Honors in Geophysics Requirements

Foundation Courses

any of the following courses (with at least 6 units at the 400-level):

Notes:

Students entering the Honors Geophysics program after first year may take GEOPH 210 in lieu of GEOPH 110 . However, students will not receive credit for both GEOPH 110 and GEOPH 210 .
Not all 200-, 300- and 400-level Physics courses are offered every year so students should plan accordingly.
Students without a background in computer programming are strongly encouraged to take CMPUT 174 as one of their Science Options in their first year.
Students in Geophysics will not have the formal prerequisites for many of the AREC, CH E, CIV E, CMPUT, EAS, ECE, MIN E, and PET E courses, and must request permission to register in those courses from the department offering the particular course.
To fulfill the knowledge requirements for registration as a professional geoscientist (P. Geo.) through APEGA (Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta), meet with an Geophysics program advisor to discuss appropriate course selections. Notes:

Upper level GEOPH and PHYS courses require certain MATH courses as prerequisites. These prerequisites must be considered when choosing Science options.
The Minor in Geophysics degree program does NOT meet the knowledge requirements for registration as a professional geophysicist (P.
