Doctor of Philosophy with Specialization in Biopreservation (Laboratory Medicine and Pathology)


Program Requirements


Students entering the program after a BSc degree are required to complete a minimum of 12 units in graded coursework and a thesis.

Students entering the program after an MSc degree are required to complete a minimum of 6 units in graded coursework and a thesis.

Required Coursework


  • LABMP 510  
  • If required, two 3-unit graded graduate-level courses in Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (LABMP) or approved courses in other departments
  • Course requirements are approved by the Supervisor and Supervisory Committee based on the background of the student and the area of research specialization.
  • Additional coursework may be required

Specific courses required for the MSc or PhD degree that have been taken to satisfy the requirements of a previous degree can be substituted with another course at the same level, subject to recommendation by the supervisor (in consultation with the supervisory committee, where appropriate), and approval of the Department’s Graduate Program Director.

Thesis


  • Registration in 900-level THES

Seminar Requirement


Students must attend specified seminars and make one or more presentations as specified by the Department.

PhD Proposal


Students must submit a PhD Proposal package following the completion of the majority of their coursework and within the first 2 years of the program. See PhD Proposal on the Department website for details.

Candidacy Exam


Students must complete their candidacy examination within 6 months of their PhD Proposals being approved by the LMP Graduate Studies Committee.

Ethics Requirement


Thesis-based students in the Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology must meet the FGSR Ethics and Academic Citizenship Training Requirement  through the completion of INT D 710  (for both master’s and doctoral students) and INT D 720  (for doctoral students) by the end of the first term of registration in their degree program.

Doctoral students who completed their Master’s degree at the University of Alberta and previously passed INT D 710  are only required to take INT D 720 .

Professional Development Requirement


Students in the Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology must satisfy the FGSR Professional Development Requirement .

Length of Program


For the PhD, the minimum program length is three years. A realistic program length is 5 years.

The maximum time to complete the PhD program as set by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research is six years.
