General Information


The Department of Medicine offers the degrees of MSc and PhD. The Department offers a specialization in Translational Medicine (MSc only) as well as a general program in Medicine, either as part of a coordinated program of training leading to the fulfillment of requirements for postgraduate training in the medical specialties, or as a separate program for those proceeding from a BSc or equivalent degree.

Research may be carried out in the basic sciences, epidemiology, public health sciences, or clinical sciences and may be either theoretical or applied in nature.

The Department of Medicine maintains a compilation of applicable guidelines and regulations available on the Department website.

Entrance Requirements


For Master’s programs, the Department’s minimum admission requirements are an undergraduate degree with an admission GPA of at least 3.3 on the 4-point scale from the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification and standing from a recognized institution. The admission GPA will be calculated on the last 60 units of graded coursework completed, or on the equivalent of the last two years of full-time graded coursework.

For Doctoral programs, The Department’s minimum admission requirements are a research-based master’s degree with an admission GPA of at least 3.3 on the 4-point scale from the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification and standing from a recognized institution. The admission GPA will be calculated on the last 60 units of graded coursework completed, or on the equivalent of the last two years of full-time graded coursework.

Where applicable, applicants must provide proof of English Language Proficiency (refer to English Language Requirement ).

  • Applicants must have a minimum overall Academic IELTS score of 7.0, with a minimum of 6.5 on each band.

Applicants are also required to submit a curriculum vitae (CV), statement of interest, two letters of reference, and a letter from their prospective supervisor indicating their agreement to supervise and describing the sources of funding. For University of Alberta Residents, one of the letters of reference must be a letter of support from their Program Director.

For Canadian citizens, the application deadlines are August 1 for September entrance, December 1 for January entrance, April 1 for May entrance, and June 1 for July entrance.

For international students, the application deadlines are June 1 for September entrance, October 1 for January entrance, February 1 for May entrance, and April 1 for July entrance.

Academic Standing Requirements


All students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7, with no grade less than B-.

Financial Assistance


The Department of Medicine requires the supervisor to provide all personal and research funding, but the student is encouraged to apply for funding from other sources such as award competitions to take some of the financial burden off the supervisor. For MD research trainees in the Clinician Investigator MSc Program, personal funding is available through external funding agencies, the Postgraduate Medical Education Office, or through clinical departments or divisions.
