Master of Arts / Master of Library and Information Studies Combined Program (Library and Information Studies)

The School of Library and Information Studies and the Digital Humanities Program offer a combined MA in Digital Humanities/MLIS program that students can complete within three years. Refer to Master of Arts / Master of Library and Information Studies (Digital Humanities) for additional information.

Program Requirements

Students are required to complete a minimum of 45 units in coursework and a thesis

Coursework

Digital Humanities (18 units)

Students are strongly encouraged to take the required Digital Humanities courses during their first year.

DH 500 - Survey of Digital Humanities
DH 510 - Topics in Digital Theory and Culture
DH 520 - Topics in Technical Concepts and Approaches
DH 530 - Topics in Building in Context
Two 3-unit Digital Humanities elective courses

Library and Information Studies (27 units)

LIS 501 - Foundations of Library and Information Studies - normally a prerequisite for the rest of the program
LIS 502 - Organization of Information
LIS 503 - Reference and Information Services
LIS 504 - Leadership and Management Principles for Library and Information Services
LIS 505 - Introduction to Research in Library and Information Studies
LIS 597 - Advanced Research and Scholarship in LIS
three 3-unit LIS elective courses

Thesis

Registration in 900-level THES. The student’s thesis committee should normally include faculty members from both programs.

Ethics Requirement

Students in the Master of Library and Information Studies programs must meet the FGSR Ethics and Academic Citizenship Training Requirement through the completion of INT D 710 by the end of the first term of registration in their degree program.

Professional Development Requirement

Students in the combined MA/MLIS program must satisfy the FGSR Professional Development Requirement .

Length of Program

A full-time student who is registered for the combined MA/MLIS degree normally will be able to complete the degree requirements in three years.

The maximum time to complete the thesis-based combined MA/MLIS program is six years (see Time Limit for Completion of Graduate Programs ).
