Master of Arts in Religious Studies (History, Classics, and Religion)


Program Requirements


Students are required to complete a minimum of 18 units in graduate coursework, and a thesis.

Elective Courses (15 units)


  • Courses will be determined in consultation with the supervisor.
  • Courses may include Religious Studies (RELIG) courses, courses offered by other departments and programs with Religious Studies content or courses offered by other departments and programs with a theoretical or intellectual bearing on the student’s particular area of research

Thesis


  • Registration in 900-level THES. Students must write and defend a thesis in the area of Religious Studies.

Professional Development and Ethics Requirements


All students  must meet the FGSR Ethics and Academic Citizenship Training Requirement  through the completion of INT D 710  by the end of the first term of registration in their degree program. Students must also meet the mandatory Professional Development Requirement .

Attendance at the monthly doctoral seminar, RELIG 675 , is expected of MA students in residence.

Language Requirement


  • Students are required to demonstrate reading competence in a language other than English relevant to their proposed area of research. This requirement may be met through passing one of the language examinations administered by an Arts department, or through completing 6 units of a 200-level language with a B+ or better. Exemptions will be considered on a case by case basis. Normally this requirement is to be met during the first year of registration, and in all cases prior to graduation. Language courses will not normally count as graduate credits for the program.

Residence Requirement


The minimum period of residence is one academic year of full-time attendance at the University of Alberta.

Length of Program


The normal time for completion of course work is one year, with a further year for completion of the thesis.

The maximum time to complete the thesis-based MA program as set by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research is four years.
