Master of Science (Renewable Resources)


Program Requirements


Students are required to complete a minimum of 8 units in coursework and a thesis.

Coursework


Course requirements for the MSc are based on the student’s previous training and the anticipated needs in the student’s area of specialization.

  • REN R 603 - Graduate Research Skills  
  • REN R 604 - Graduate Research Seminar  
  • A minimum of 6 units of courses at the 500- or 600- level.
    • Coursework should include at least 3 units in research methods, statistics, and/or experimental design.
  • The other units may be drawn from those listed for the Department of Renewable Resources, and from other Departments within the University.
  • Additional courses may be required at the discretion of the student’s supervisor.

Thesis


  • Registration in 900-level THES. Students must prepare an acceptable thesis presenting results of research conducted. Candidates will be examined orally on their thesis results by committees formed according to Supervision and Examinations of this Calendar.

Ethics Requirement


Students must meet the FGSR Ethics and Academic Citizenship Training Requirement  through the completion of INT D 710  (for both master’s and doctoral students) by the end of the first term of registration in their degree program.

Professional Development Requirement


Students must complete the IDP portion of their FGSR Professional Development Requirement  within the first 6 months for students starting in the fall term, and within the first 12 months for students starting in the winter term. Guidance for developing the IDP is provided through the Graduate Seminar Course REN R 603.

Residence Requirement


The minimum period of residence is two, four-month terms of full-time attendance at the University of Alberta.

Length of Program


Normally, at least two academic years of research are required to complete the MSc.

The maximum time to complete the thesis-based MSc program as set by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research is four years.
