Coursework

• SURG 530 - Directed Reading in Biology and Medicine  
• SURG 600 - Research Seminar  
• One 3-unit graduate level statistics course; one of the following courses offered by the School of Public Health is recommended
  • SPH 531 - Statistical Methods in Health Research  
  • SPH 519 - Biostatistics I  
• Two 3-unit graduate-level graded courses
  • Students in Clinician Investigator Program (CIP) must take MED 650 - Fundamentals for Clinical Investigators  
  • Students are encouraged to take graduate-level courses in other departments that complement their specific research area
  • Courses are approved in consultation with the supervisory committee and the departmental graduate coordinator

Specific courses required for the MSc degree that have been taken to satisfy the requirements of a previous degree can be substituted with another course at the same level, subject to recommendation by the supervisor (in consultation with the supervisory committee, where appropriate), and approval of the Department’s Graduate Program Director.

Thesis

• Registration in 900-level THES. Preparation and defense of a thesis based on research performed by the candidate

Candidacy Exam

PhD students are required to take a candidacy exam within three years (36 months) of the start of their program.

Professional Development and Ethics Requirements

Students are required to fulfill the FGSR Professional Development Requirement  and the FGSR Academic Integrity and Ethics Training Requirement .
