Doctor of Philosophy (Anthropology)


Program Requirements


Students are required to complete a minimum of 18 units in coursework. Students are also required to complete and defend a thesis.

Required coursework


  • Six 3-unit courses, normally taken in the first year
  • The nature of the coursework will be determined by the student and the supervisor.
  • ANTHR 601 , normally taken in the first term, is required of all new PhD students who did not complete ANTHR 501  as an MA student in this Department.
  • There are areas of research within the Department that may require knowledge of an additional language (or languages). The need for additional language skills will be decided between the doctoral student and supervisor as part of the planning of the student’s program, and will be reviewed by the Associate Chair (Graduate Programs).

Professional Development Requirement


  • During the course of their programs, PhD students will be required to attend two two-hour Professional Development Workshops offered by the Department of which one shall be the departmental graduate student research ethics workshop except where the student has already taken this workshop in the MA Anthropology program.

Research Ethics Requirement


  • Where ethics clearance is required as stipulated in the latest version of the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans, students must receive ethics clearance from the appropriate University Research Ethics Board prior to commencing their research.

Thesis


  • Registration in 900-level THES.
  • The final PhD examination will include a public lecture followed by a closed oral examination.

Candidacy Exam


Prior to the candidacy examination, the student must submit a satisfactory research proposal that will lead to production of a thesis of publishable quality based on original advanced research and theoretical interpretation.

Normally, the candidacy examination shall be held at the end of the second year or the beginning of the third year of the program. All program requirements, except for the thesis, must be completed by the end of the third year of the program.

Residence Requirement


Residence requirements are those of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research – two academic years (where an academic year is defined as the eight-month period from September through April).

Length of Program


The maximum time to complete the PhD program as set by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research is six years.
