The Certificate in Archaeology is designed to develop students’ research skills in archaeology through a combination of course work and hands-on experience. This is a multidisciplinary certificate offered jointly through the Department of Anthropology and the Department of History, Classics, and Religion. This certificate is open to any undergraduate student at the University of Alberta. The certificate will indicate to employers and graduate schools that the students have taken a select range of courses that have given them a thorough grounding in the basic principles and practices of archaeology.
To be awarded the certificate students must apply through Undergraduate Student Services in the Faculty of Arts by the application deadline for convocation (see Academic Schedule) and have approval from either the Department of Anthropology or the Department of History, Classics, and Religion. Students are encouraged to apply by the beginning of their third year. Preference will be given to certificate students in the selection process for field schools.
Students may pursue the Certificate in Archaeology by fulfilling existing requirements for majors, minors or honors in their respective disciplines and by completing 27 units in Archaeology coursework as follows:
