Master of Science (Medical Microbiology and Immunology)

Program Requirements

Students are required to complete a minimum of 9 units in coursework and a thesis.

Course requirements depend on the area of specialization and the undergraduate background of the student.


  • At least two 3-unit graduate-level course
    • Course selection should be discussed with the supervisor
    • Selected courses may be taken from other departments
  • Students must participate each year and must register once for credit during the program in the Medical Microbiology and Immunology seminar course, MMI 501 .
  • Additional coursework may be required


  • Registration in 900-level THES. A candidate for the MSc degree must submit an acceptable thesis and defend it orally. The Department recommends the thesis be written in the traditional format.

Ethics Requirement

Students must meet the FGSR Ethics and Academic Citizenship Training Requirement  through the completion of INT D 710  (for both master’s and doctoral students) by the end of the first term of registration in their degree program.

Academic Standing Requirement

Students are required to maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.7 with no grade less than B-; however, students wishing to proceed to a later PhD in the Department must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 with no grade less than B-.

Residence Requirement

The minimum period of residence is two years of full-time attendance at the University of Alberta.

Length of program

The time required to complete the program depends on the student’s background and the nature of the thesis project. Normally, a minimum of two years of full-time study and research is required for the MSc degree.

The maximum time to complete the thesis-based MSc program as set by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research is four years.
