Honors in Psychology [Science]

Final acceptance into the Honors program is dependent upon obtaining approval from a potential research supervisor.
Continuation in and graduation from the Honors Psychology program require successful completion of 24 units with a minimum GPA of 3.3 in each Fall/Winter Term. Exceptions to this requirement must be approved by both the Department of Psychology and the Faculty of Science. In addition, students must present a minimum of 48 units (but no more than 66 units senior) in Psychology courses and a minimum of 72 units in Science courses. A student’s program of courses must be approved in advance each year by the Honors Psychology advisor.

Honors in Psychology requires:
The following courses from other Departments are also required:
- 6 units selected from 100-level ENGL OR 3 units in 100-level ENGL and 3 units in WRS 101
- 6 units from BIOL, CHEM, PHYS
- 6 units from ANTHR, ECON, LING, POL S, and/or SOC
3 units from
- Any other computing science; mathematics; or statistics courses approved by the Honors Advisor.

A minimum of 48 units at the senior level in PSYCH including:
- PSYCH 212 - Introduction to Research Methods in Psychology which must be completed by the end of the first term after admission to the program)
- PSYCH 309 - Honors Seminar I (normally taken in the third year)
- PSYCH 390 - Honors Thesis I: Research Apprenticeship (normally taken in the third year; to be taken twice)
- PSYCH 409 - Honors Seminar II (taken in the fourth year)
- PSYCH 499 - Honors Thesis II: Thesis Research (taken in the fourth year; to be taken twice)
- PSYCH 303 - History of Ideas in Psychology (normally taken in the third or fourth year) OR
- PSYCH 304 - History of Modern Psychology (normally taken in the third or fourth year)
- One advanced research methods course approved by the Honors advisor (3 units normally taken in the third or fourth year)
- Two 400-level substantive content (nonmethods) Psychology courses approved by the Honors Advisor and excluding PSYCH 409, PSYCH 410, PSYCH 411, PSYCH 413, PSYCH 431, PSYCH 475, PSYCH 476, PSYCH 482, PSYCH 496, PSYCH 498, and PSYCH 499.
Options (normally taken in year 3)
- 9-12 units in approved Science options
- 6-9 units in approved options or other advanced research methods course approved by the Honors Advisor
Options (normally taken in year 4)
- 9-15 units in approved Science options
- 3-9 units in approved options
Notes
- In addition to the courses specifically listed above, the program must include, among the student’s optional courses, a minimum of 12 units in one or more disciplines other than Psychology. These courses may not overlap those used to fulfil the Computing/Mathematics/Statistics, Natural Science and Social Science requirements listed above
