The Degree of MA (East Asian Studies) [Graduate]


Program Requirements


Students are required to complete a minimum of ★18 in coursework and a thesis.

Core Courses (★6)


These courses are taken in the first year.

Elective courses (★12)


  • The exact number of courses and their areas shall be determined on an individual basis, in consultation with the supervisor and approved by the Associate Chair – Graduate Studies.
  • Up to ★6 in graduate courses from other departments or units may be counted as part of the degree program.
  • The coursework selected must make a demonstrable contribution to strengthening the degree, and typically consists of methodology courses in linguistics, literary and cultural theory, historiography, etc.

Thesis


  • Registration in 900-level THES
    MA theses in the Department of East Asian Studies should represent original, substantial research in primary sources in the target language, whether Chinese, Japanese, Korean or a combination of these.

Residence Requirement


The residency requirement is full-time enrolment for two four-month terms.

Length of Program


The time required to complete the MA programs will vary with the individual candidate. It is assumed a candidate will normally complete the program requirements in two years.

The maximum time to complete the thesis-based MA program as set by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research is four years.
